| テーマ・内容 | Theme: Contemporary Japan in Comparative Context
This class aims to enrich your understanding of contemporary Japanese society by examining some of its institutions, trends, and issues in a comparative and historical context. It aims to help you answer two basic questions: (1) To what extent are Japan's institutions, trends, and issues similar to those of other comparably developed societies? (2) How is Japan distinctive, and will (should) it remain so? The course will be based on lectures, reading and discussion. Topics will include: a) family, b) work and economic life; c) youth; and d)race, ethnicity and migration. We will approach each topic through a general sociological overview based on the work of Anthony Giddens, followed by a study of the specific experience of contemporary Japan. | |
