　こんにちは。私は東洋英和の2年生で、この冬の1月から3月にかけて、学校の3ヶ月プログラムを利用して留学する機会が与えられました。東洋英和は、海外で高校生活を送ることを希望する高1と高2の学生に3ヶ月の留学プログラムを提供しています。このプログラムでは、合計12人の学生がアメリカ、カナダ及びオーストラリアで一学期を過ごすことができ、2人の学生が各学校に送られます。今日は、アメリカでの私の経験について少しお話ししたいと思います。3ヶ月間、私はアメリカアイオワ州のペラと言う街に滞在しました。ペラは人口10,000人の小さな街で、チューリップで有名です。そこで、地元のアメリカ人家族が私を迎えてくれました。私のホストファミリーは4人いました。ホストファーザー、ホストマザー、19歳のホストブラザー、そして同年齢のホストシスターがいました。彼らはとうもろこし畑の真ん中にある美しい青い家に住んでいました。私のホストファミリーについて最も感謝しているのは、彼らが非常に暖かく迎え入れてくれたと言うことです。また、彼らは日本について非常に興味がありました。彼らは私に日本について多くの質問をし、東京での私の生活について話をしました。多くの場合、彼らは私の生活が田舎の生活とどれほど違うかに驚いているように見えました。日本人が時々馬を食べると言った時、彼らは最も驚いたように見えました。

　平日、私はペラクリスチャン高校と言う地元のアメリカの高校に通いました。私はほとんどのクラスを毎日アメリカの学生と一緒に受講しました。私のお気に入りのクラスは世界史で、中世ヨーロッパの歴史について学びました。この学校の教え方は、暗記だけでなく、授業で批判的な思考とライティングのスキルを必要とするため、日本で慣れ親しんでいた方法とは大きく異なりました。私はこの学校で受けたすべての授業を通して、ライティング能力を大きく伸ばしたと思います。また、毎日体育の授業を取りましたが、驚いたことにかなり激しいものでした。私の体育のクラスには多くの男子がいましたが、私にとっては新しい経験でした。個人的には、女子とだけスポーツをする方が楽しいと思います。私は学校の陸上チームの一員でした。私は毎日放課後の練習に参加しました。また、他の学校と試合をした後、会場でミーティングも行っていました。特に短距離走ではほとんどのアメリカ人学生がとても速かったです。それは私たちアジア人に比べて全員足がとても長いからだと思いました。スポーツは人々を知り友達を作るには本当に素晴らしい方法であると言うことがわかりました。

　週末には、他にもたくさんのことをしました。私のホストマザーは花屋だったので、時々私はホストシスターと一緒に彼女のお店で彼女のお手伝いをしました。日曜日に、私たちは午前中に教会に行き、朝の礼拝に出席しました。ペラに住む多くの人々はキリスト教徒であり、街には30以上の教会がありました。ホストファミリーも必ず食事の前にお祈りをしました。東洋英和で受けたキリスト教教育のおかげで、教会はとても快適に感じました。日本と比べてアメリカや多くの国ではクリスチャンとしての生活は非常に一般的であるため、キリスト教の知識を持つことは非常に重要であることに気づきました。私はこの3ヶ月で様々な面で成長しました。毎日、1日中英語を話すことになったので、私の英語のスキルは急速に成長しました。高校生として海外に留学した事はとても有意義だったと思います。それはホストファミリーと過ごす時間が増えたからです。彼らの助けがなければ、私は学校に行くことさえできませんでした。私は彼らと一緒に多くの時間を過ごすようになったので、ホストファミリーから様々な視点を学びました。また多くの人と知り合いになりました。アメリカの学生だけでなく、ブラジル、アフガニスタン、メキシコ、ホンジュラスなど世界中の学生と友達になりました。彼らの文化そして彼らの国での生活について知ることはとても楽しかったです。この3ヶ月で私は英語をより勉強し、世界についてより学ぶようになりました。それによって将来私は世界で活躍できるようなキャリアを積むことができると思います。ご静聴有り難うございました。

　Hi. I am a Senior 2 student at Toyo Eiwa High School and I was given the opportunity to study abroad this past winter, from January to March, using our school's three months program. Toyo Eiwa offers a three months study abroad program to Senior 1 and Senior 2 students who are willing to experience a high school life overseas. This program allows a total of twelve students to spend a quarter in the United States, Canada, and America, and two students are sent to each school. Today, I would like to talk a little bit about my experience in the US. For three months, I stayed in a town named Pella, in the state of Iowa, the United States. Pella is rather a small town with the population of only 10,000 people, and it is famous for its tulips. There, a local American family hosted me. There were four other people in my host family; I had a host father, a host mother, a 19-year-old host brother and a host sister who was the same age as me. They lived in a beautiful blue house in the middle of the corn fields. What I appreciated the most about my host family is that they were very inclusive. They treated me like one of their true family members. They were also very curious about Japan. They would ask me a lot of questions about Japan and I would tell them about my life in Tokyo. Often times, they seemed to be surprised by how different my life is compared to their country life, but they seemed most astonished when I told them that Japanese people sometimes eat horse.

　On weekdays, I attended a local American high school, named Pella Christian High School. I took most of my classes with American students everyday. My favorite class was world history, where I learned about the history of middle age Europe. The teaching method at this school was very different from what I had been used to in Japan, as it was not only about memorization, but the classes often required critical thinking and writing skills to express my ideas. I believe I developed my writing skill by far through all the lessons I took at this school. I also took PE every day, which to my surprise, was pretty intense. There were many boys in my PE class which was a new experience for me, but personally I think it is more fun to play a sport only with girls. I was also a part of the school track team. I participated in the after school practices every day as well as track meets where I competed with other schools. Most of the American students were unbelievably fast especially the short distance, but I figured that is only because they all have super long legs compared to us Asian. I found out that sports is really a great way to get to know people and make friends.

　On weekends, I did so many other things. My host mother was a florist, so I sometimes helped her at her shop with my host sister. My host family would often take me shopping in town or to go out to eat. On Sundays, we went to church in the morning and attended morning chapel. The majority of people in Pella was Christian, and there were more than 30 churches in town. My host family also prayed before every meal. Because of all the Christian education I'd taken at Toyo Eiwa, I felt very comfortable even at church. I realized that having knowledge in Christianity is very important when living in a foreign society, as it is so much more common in America and many other countries than it is in Japan.

　I grew in so many different ways over these three months. My English skills developed rapidly, as I got to speak English all day, everyday. I believe it was very meaningful to have studied overseas as a high school student, because that helped me spend more time with my host family. Without their help, I could not even go to school, but I learned a lot from my host parents, like different perspectives of life, because I got to spend so much time with them. I also got to know many people. I made friends with not only American students but with students all over the world as well, such as Brazil, Afghanistan, Mexico and Honduras. I enjoyed getting to know about their culture, and their lives in their own countries. These three months motivated me to study English harder and learn more about the world, so that in the future, I can have a career which will involve and influence the world.
