｢2014年度 アメリカ語学研修｣

学年：高一　Y.I.さん、Y.A.さん、H.N.さん、M.M.さん

期間：2015年3月20日（金）～4月3日（金）

We went on an English language exchange program in Minnesota from March 20th to April 3rd.

There were 20 students and two teachers.

We attended Shattuck-St. Mary's school, which is a boarding school and we stayed in a dormitory near the Shattuck campus.

　

The first weekend before taking classes, we took part in a lot of events.

We went ice skating at an ice rink at Shattuck.

This school has two big ice skating rinks and Shattuck students play hockey and figure skate every day.

We could skate to our hearts' content. At first we worried about whether we could skate well or not.

We got to skate hand in hand at the end of this program.

We iced skated with Shattuck students and talked a lot.

At the end of the day, we had a welcome party with Shattuck students.

Most of us met our student leaders for the first time.

Student leaders are the students who study at Shattuck-St. Mary's school.

They helped us with our lives and classes for two weeks.

Since this high school has many international students, there are Chinese, Korean and Cambodian, along with American students.

We talked with Shattuck students in English a lot and played games together.

　

The next day was Sunday and we visited Mr. Garcia's mother's house.

We had lunch in a big party room.

There was a swimming pool too.

His mother made lunch for us and moreover she made dessert for us.

The main course for lunch was turkey and roasted pig and dessert was a custard pudding.

They were great and very delicious.

　

Life at Shattuck-St. Mary's was quite different from Toyo Eiwa.

Almost 80% of Shattuck students live in the school's dormitory.

Every student can choose the subjects they want to study deeply.

　

Moreover, Shattuck has a small class system so they can communicate with their teachers more closely and focus their attention on studying during classes.

We could take algebra, engineering, ESL, world history and even more classes.

I especially enjoyed taking theater class!

It was fun and very interesting.

　

The facilities of the school are also very different.

Since there are a lot of overseas students, most of the eat all of their meals; breakfast, lunch and dinner, in the school's cafeteria.

None of the students have regular table members at mealtime.

They always change who they sit with, but it's not on purpose.

They even welcomed new members like us openly.

They're pretty friendly to everyone regardless of country, age or girls or boys.

I was so happy that I could talk to various students during mealtimes.

Everyone works on something very eagerly like musical instruments, sports, creating something or studying.

I have to be like them.

　

One of my favorite places at Shattuck was "WeCreate."

They have a fashion design studio, recording studio and many computers.

Students can use them whenever they want.

One day, I visited the fashion design studio in our free time.

One of our student leaders was there.

Her name is Griffin and she studies fashion design so she was making her own skirt.

Even though she was working, she welcomed me and made a pillow for me! She is very sweet.

It was a wonderful experience.

Everything at Shattuck was so fresh and amazing for us.

Because of this experience, my feelings about studying overseas are even stronger.

　

On March 25th we visited St. Paul which is the capital city of Minnesota.

We went to Humboldt High School where Mr. Garcia graduated.

It is a public school so their students don't have to wear uniforms.

Another thing different from Toyo Eiwa is Humboldt gives all students breakfast every morning, so they eat breakfast at school.

　

We each had one Humboldt student partner so we could talk to them a lot.

They took us around their school and then we played badminton together.

It was exciting because my partner was a good badminton player and we won the championship.

After having lunch, we attended classes with our partners. I had a military class.

　

I watched a movie about war.

They usually learn how to read maps, land navigation and do training like in the army.

We don't have such a class at Toyo Eiwa so that was interesting.

We couldn't spend much time at Humboldt but we had a wonderful time!

　

Then we went to see an NBA game.

It was the Minnesota Timberwolves versus the Los Angeles Lakers.

The seats were very close to the court.

All of the fans cheered wildly and at halftime they had many special performances.

In the end the Wolves lost by two points in overtime, but It was a very close game so I was really excited!!

After the game, we could meet Jeremy Lin who is the first Asian American NBA player.

He was very tall, and we could take a picture together.

　

On the second weekend, we went shopping.

We bought clothes, souvenirs and food.

On Sunday we had a chapel service.

It was "Palm Sunday," which is to remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem before Easter, so we held palm branches during the service and after that we made palm crosses.

It was the first time for me to experience "Palm Sunday," so I could feel some differences in ideas about Easter time between Japan and overseas.

　

On the next day we had a Cook Festival after school we made popular Japanese dishes; chicken teriyaki, okonomiyaki and kenchin soup all by ourselves and we invited Shattuck students to join us.

We took a lot of time making everything, but the tastes were a little different from here at home, but our guests still liked everything.

　

On the last day of our classes, we gave presentations about our cultures.

I introduced World Heritage sites from Japan.

Some of us presented the differences between Shattuck and Eiwa, others talked about their friends.

We spent many hours preparing for these presentations because it was hard to explain about what we take for granted every day.

　

After that we had a "Goodbye Party.

We had cakes and had a good time with Shattuck students.

That was the last time to meet our new friends.

All of them said they would miss us and wished for us to have a safe flight.

There were so kind, cheerful and talkative that none of us wanted to say goodbye to them.

　

The next morning we left the dormitory and came back to Japan from Minnesota.

I hope to keep the friendships with those new friends we met on this trip and make the most of what we learned from students our age from a different culture.

　

私たちは3月20日から4月3日まで、アメリカ語学研修に参加しました。

高校一年生20名が参加し、ネイティブの先生、日本人の先生が一人ずつ引率してくださいました。

約２週間、キャンパスの近くにある英和生専用の寮に滞在しながら、ミネソタ州にあるシャタック・セントメアリーズ・スクールで学びました。

　

授業が始まる前の週末に、私たちは多くのイベントに参加しました。

一番初めに学校の中にあるスケートリンクでアイススケートをしました。

シャタックには大きなスケートリンクが２つあり、生徒たちは毎日ホッケーやフィギュアスケートをしています。

最初は上手に滑ることができるか不安でしたが、心ゆくまで滑ることができ、最後には全員が手をつないで滑れるようになりました。

　

その日の夜、私たちはシャタックの生徒からウェルカムパーティーに招待されました。

私たちのほとんどは、そこで初めてStudent leaderという、2週間私たち英和生の生活や授業のお世話をしてくれるシャタックの生徒と会いました。

シャタックでは多くの留学生が学んでいます。

そのためアメリカ人だけではなく、中国人や韓国人、カンボジア人など様々な国の人たちと、英語でたくさん話をしたり、一緒にゲームをしたりして過ごしました。

　

翌日の日曜日は、引率してくださったガルシア先生のお母様のお宅を訪ねました。

プールもある大きなパーティルームで、私たちに昼食をご馳走してくださいました。

メイン料理は七面鳥とローストピッグで、さらにデザートにはカスタードプリンも作ってくださいました。

どれも皆、素晴らしくて美味しいお料理でした。

　

Shattuck St.-Mary'sでの生活は、東洋英和でのものとは全く異なるものでした。

まず、約80%の生徒が学校の寮で生活しています。

授業は少人数・選択制なので、自分の好きな教科を深く学べると同時に、先生方と積極的にコミュニケーションを取りながら学習に集中することができます。

私たちは代数やエンジニアリング、留学生向けの英語、世界史などさまざまな授業を受けることができました。

特に楽しかったのは演劇の授業です。

ただ楽しいだけでなく非常に興味深い内容のものでした。

　

学校の施設や設備にも大きな違いがありました。

多くの留学生が在籍しているため、ほとんどの生徒は一日の全ての食事を学校の食堂で済ませてしまいます。

固定のメンバーで食事をする生徒はおらず、いつも違う生徒が同じテーブルに座っています。

私たちのこともいつもオープンに迎えてくれました。

彼らは本当にフレンドリーで、性別や学年、出身などを気にせず接してくれます。

食事の時間はたくさんの生徒たちと話せる、幸せな時間でした。

彼らは音楽、スポーツ、クリエイティブなこと、勉強など、みんな何かにとても熱心に打ち込んでいました。

私も見習わなければと思います。

　

Shattuckでの私のお気に入りの場所は、"WeCreate" と呼ばれる所です。

ファッションデザインのスタジオやレコーディングスタジオ、作業用のパソコンなどを生徒達が自由に使用することができます。

ある日、自由時間のときに何気なくファッションデザインスタジオを訪れたら、Student leaderの一人がいました。

彼女はグリフィンという留学生で、ファッションデザインの授業の課題であるスカートを作っていたのですが、作業中にもかかわらず私を迎え入れてくれ、おまけに即席の枕を作ってくれました。

彼女の優しさに感動するとともに、すばらしい思い出になりました。

私たちにとってはShattuckにあるもの全てが新鮮で、とてもすばらしかったです。

この経験を通して、将来留学をしたいという気持ちをさらに強めることができました。

　

私たちは3月25日に、ミネソタの州都であるセントポールを訪れ、ガルシア先生の卒業されたハンボルトハイスクールに行きました。

そこは公立高校なので制服はありません。

さらに東洋英和と異なる点は、学校で朝食が配られるということです。

つまり生徒たちは毎朝登校してから朝食をとります。

　

その日1日、私たちには一人ひとり、ハンボルトの生徒がパートナーとしてついてくれたので、たくさん話すことが出来ました。

まず学校内を案内してもらい、次に体育館でパートナーとペアになってバドミントンをしました。

私は、パートナーがとても上手だったので、トーナメントで勝つことができ、とても楽しかったです。

　

昼食をいただいた後はパートナーと一緒に授業をうけました。

私はミリタリーの授業を受け、戦争についての映画を観ました。

普段は地図の読み方やランドナビゲーションを学んだり、陸軍のようにトレーニングをしたりするそうです。

東洋英和にはそのような科目はないのでとても興味深かったです。

ハンボルトではたくさんの時間過ごすことはできませんでしたが、貴重な体験をした良い時間でした。

　

その後、ミネソタティンバーウルブス対ロサンゼルスレイカーズのNBAの試合を観戦しに行きました。

席がコートに近くて、ファンの熱気を感じられたのでとてもわくわくしました。

また、ハーフタイムのパフォーマンスも印象的でした。

結果、地元チームであるティンバーウルブスは2点差で負けてしまいましたが、接戦だったのでどきどきさせられて楽しい試合でした。

試合後、アジア人初のNBA選手である、ジェレミーリン選手に会うことができました。

本当に背が高くて驚きました。一緒に写真を撮ることもできて嬉しかったです。

　

二度目の週末はショッピングに行き、服やお土産などを買いました。

また、日曜日には礼拝を持ちました。

その日は"Palm Sunday"（聖枝祭）と言う、キリストがイースターの直前にイェルサレムに入城したことを記念する日だったので、私たちはヤシ(Palm)の葉を持って礼拝し、礼拝後はその葉を折って十字架を作りました。

私は"Palm Sunday"の礼拝を持つのが初めてだったので、日本と海外のイースターの過ごし方の違いを感じることができました。

　

次の日の放課後には「クックフェスティバル」を行いました。

私たちはシャタックの生徒を招待して、照り焼きチキン、お好み焼き、けんちん汁など、人気のある日本料理を作りました。

作るのには時間がかかり、味もいつも日本で食べているものとは少し変わったものになってしまいましたが、シャタックのみんなは気に入ってくれました。

　

最後の授業の日、私たちは自分たちの文化についてプレゼンをしました。

私は日本の世界遺産について発表しましたが、英和とシャタックの違いや、自分の親友について話した人もいました。

日々当たり前のことと思っている文化を説明するのは難しく、このプレゼンの準備にはとても時間がかかりました。

　

その後はさよならパーティがありました。

私たちはケーキを食べながらシャタックの生徒と楽しく過ごしました。

その時が新しく出会った友達と会える最後のチャンスだったので、彼らは私たちとの別れを惜しみ、無事な帰国を願ってくれました。

優しくておもしろくて、おしゃべりが大好きな彼らに別れを告げるのは本当に辛かったです。

　

次の日の朝、私たちは寮を後にし、ミネソタを発って帰国しました。

私はこの旅で育んだ友情を大切にし、異なった環境の同年代から学んだことを最大限に生かしたいと思います。
